Program to certify 350 technicians in drone operations.
Talking Points
The National Electrical Trade Council (NETCO) has launched the Red Seal Powerline Technician Upgrade Initiative, supported by the Government of Canada’s Sustainable Jobs stream. This national training project aims to modernize powerline technicians’ skills through accredited drone training and certification, running until March 31, 2030.
- The initiative will train and certify 350 technicians across 35 cohorts.
- Initial training locations include Saskatchewan, Yukon, Manitoba, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
- The project is funded by a $3.2 million investment aimed at enhancing safety and efficiency in powerline operations.
This initiative is significant as it integrates advanced drone technology into powerline maintenance, promoting a sustainable low-carbon economy while improving worker safety and operational efficiency.
The National Electrical Trade Council (NETCO), with support from the Sustainable Jobs stream of the Government of Canada’s Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy, has launched the Red Seal Powerline Technician Upgrade Initiative.
The program is a national training project designed to modernize the skillsets of powerline technicians through Transport Canada-accredited drone training and certification. Training will be delivered nationwide in partnership with Saskatchewan Polytechnic and IBEW Local Unions.
The 57-month project will run until March 31, 2030, and support both unionized and non-unionized journeypersons and apprentices. Training will initially be delivered in Saskatchewan, Yukon, Manitoba, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador, with additional regions to be added.
Over its lifetime, the project is expected to train and certify 350 powerline technicians in drone operations across 35 training cohorts.
The program is funded by a total investment of $3,204,846. By integrating advanced drone technology into powerline inspection and maintenance practices, the project looks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve operational efficiency, and enhance worker safety.
Objectives of the project include the delivery of Transport Canada-approved drone training and certification for Red Seal powerline technicians, increased participation in training through wrap-around supports, enhanced safety and efficiency for technicians through reducing the need to work in hazardous or difficult-to-access environments, strengthened collaboration among IBEW Local Unions and industry partners, and expanded capacity to support a sustainable, low-carbon economy.
“Drone technology allows technicians to assess damage, inspect infrastructure, and map work areas more safely and effectively, particularly following storms and emergency events,” said NETCO director Chris Swick. “Through this partnership, NETCO and our training partners are helping ensure Canada’s powerline workforce is prepared for the future.”
