In a groundbreaking achievement for labour rights in Canada, employees at the A&W in Valleyview have become the first A&W workers in the country to unionize and successfully ratify a collective agreement — marking a powerful milestone for fast food workers nationwide.
A total of 20 employees voted to join the union, with an overwhelming 90% ratifying their first contract. This success stands as a bold statement in an industry traditionally resistant to unionization, and it sends a clear message: meaningful change is possible when workers organize.
The new agreement brings significant improvements, including:
- Enhanced workplace safety
- Increased job security
- Greater respect on the job
- A real voice in workplace decisions
One of the most innovative aspects of the agreement is the introduction of the Pathways Program — a collaborative initiative between the employer and union that provides funding for post-secondary education in a field of the employee’s choice. This program reflects a shared commitment to opportunity, empowerment, and career advancement for entry-level workers.
“This historic first in Kamloops shows what’s possible when workers stand together,” said Brian Andrews of IBEW Local 993. “These 20 courageous employees are paving the way for others in the industry to follow.”
The Valleyview A&W team’s success is already inspiring interest and momentum in the broader fast food sector. Their message to other workers across Canada is simple: you don’t have to go it alone — real strength comes from collective action.
