(Western Canada)

 

IBEW Local 2228 is seeking candidates to join a team that puts the members first.

This is a challenging position that offers great opportunities for both personal and

professional growth.

 

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2228 (IBEW L.U. 2228) is a union Chartered in 1967, that presently represents around 2000 union members across Canada in their collective relations with various employers. These members are technologists, and technicians, in the field of electronics employed in the federal public service, as well as in the federally regulated private sector.

 

Working under the direction of the Business Manager/Financial Secretary, the

Business Representative is responsible for overseeing all labour relations activities

within the Western Region. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated

team player who is dedicated to the cause of worker justice. This work involves supporting union stewards and these members in their relations with management, coordinating the progression of grievances, and assisting with negotiating collective agreements between the parties. This is considered a full-time and salaried position with contract renewals every four years.

 

The Business Representative will be expected to:

  • Assist Shop Stewards and members with interpretation of the collective bargaining agreement and applicable legislation.
  • Develop and maintain productive labour/management relationships with site and

regional managers.

  • Provide guidance, assistance and support to Unit Officers, Shop Stewards and

members.

  • Participate in grievance investigations and present grievances at all levels of the grievance procedure.
  • Promote adherence to collective agreements and any other applicable legislation.
  • Continually review collective agreements and recommend areas for improvement.
  • Occasionally work long and irregular hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Undertake frequent travel by air or ground.
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license.

 

The successful candidate will have:

  • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in a leadership role.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Excellent creative skills in problem solving, risk assessment and critical thinking.
  • Ability to work independently often with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to speak and communicate effectively to groups of any size in potentially tense situations.
  • Computer literacy skills and familiarity with most common software applications.
  • Research skills, both electronic and hard copy.
  • This position is not bilingual but the ability to communicate effectively in both official languages will be considered an asset.

 

Preference will be given to individuals who possess professional experience in any of the following areas:

  • union leadership
  • collective bargaining
  • communications
  • diversity and inclusion initiatives
  • labour relations
  • human rights/pay equity/employment equity
  • occupational health and safety
  • teaching, mentoring or coaching
  • paralegal/legal administration
