‘Electrical Non-Compliances’ Found at Water Park After ‘Tragic’ Incident Left 12 Children Seriously Injured

Preliminary findings have been released following an electrical incident during which 12 children were seriously injured.

Technical Safety BC (TSBC), an independent organization mandated by the government of British Columbia in Canada, found “electrical non-compliances” at the Cultus Lake Waterpark, where the children, aged 12 to 13, were injured on Monday, June 15; it confirmed to PEOPLE in a statement.

Per the organization’s preliminary investigation, the victims were in a “water slide queuing area” when they “received electrical shocks reportedly by contacting a metal railing.” The incident resulted in “electrical shock and burn injuries,” TSBC said.

In an update posted to Cultus Lake Waterpark’s official Instagram account, the park confirmed the incident happened past the end of the slide at their Zero to 60 attraction.

“Located there, is a steel frame tent structure with handrails. This structure is understood to be the object which victims came in contact with,” the park added.

The park also noted that it would be closed until at least Monday, June 22, as the “electrical incident” continues to be investigated.

“As we are in the early stages of review, information is limited,” the park said. “WorkSafe BC and Technical Safety BC are actively investigating the incident, and their findings will be reported. We are fully cooperating with all authorities as they complete this process.”

The park’s closure remains indefinite as the investigation continues, it says.

“At this time, we are not confirming a reopening date. Our immediate closure will continue to be extended and ongoing as needed to adequately complete all thorough reviews, and for us to address the findings and required actions. Cultus Lake Waterpark will not reopen until approval is given from WorkSafe BC, Technical Safety BC and Fraser Health,” the statement added.

It concluded, “This incident was tragic and we are deeply upset by what these children experienced at our park.”

Cultus Lake Waterpark, located near the city of Chilliwack, first released an official statement on Monday following the tragedy, in which it confirmed that a “serious incident” had occurred around 11:05 a.m. local time while guests were in the queuing area near one of the park’s rides.

The statement added that the park is “deeply saddened by the incident” that resulted in “injuries to a number of guests visiting the park, including children.”

A June 15 news release from the Chilliwack Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), confirmed that first responders arrived at the scene around 11:20 a.m. local time to address reports of “multiple injuries” at the park.

“Paramedics and other first responders attended the scene, providing medical care to 12 individuals,” the release stated. “All injured persons were transported to hospital for further assessment and treatment. The nature of the injuries are reported to be serious but not life threatening.”
