Mourn for the Dead, Fight for the Living

On April 28, workers across Canada pause to recognize the National Day of Mourning. It is a day to remember those who have lost their lives, been injured, or become ill because of their work, and to renew our commitment to making every workplace safer.

While in Ottawa for the Canadian Building Trades Conference (more on that in another post), IBEW 993 Business Manager Jim Bicknell and IBEW 993 Dispatcher Darryl Schmidt attended the Day of Mourning Ceremony in Ottawa to pay their respects on behalf of the members of Local 993.

The Day of Mourning is especially important to those of us in the construction industry. Every worker deserves to go home safe at the end of the day. As union members, we know that strong safety standards, proper training, and the ability for workers to speak up are essential to protecting lives on the job.

IBEW 993 is proud to stand with workers, families, unions, and communities across the country in remembering those we have lost and recommitting ourselves to the ongoing fight for safer workplaces.

We mourn for the dead, and we fight for the living.
