Remediation work to existing River Water Intake Begins June 2

As part of the LNG processing plant design, water will be sourced from the Kitimat River and will be used for multiple areas of the LNG Canada Project during both construction and operations.

The River Water Intake was completed in 2021; however, in spring of 2022 sedimentation build-up was observed along the base of the intake. This sediment would affect operational performance of the intake as well as installation of the Johnson screens, which filter out debris, sediment, and other unwanted materials from the water.

Remediation work will include:

• Installation of a modified log deflector to correct the build-up
• Removal of existing riprap
• Reshaping of scour protection around the intake structure

A sheet-pile cofferdam will be rebuilt around the intake area, and dewatering activities will take place to complete the remediation. The cofferdam installation is forecast to take place in early June. A temporary barge and trestle will be utilized for installation of the cofferdam and modified log deflector. The barge will be secured by trestle piles for stability and a small punt boat, designed for use on small rivers, will be used for personnel transportation and the installation of a spill boom around the work area.

Construction activities take place twenty-four hours a day—seven days per week—through Q4 of 2023. Nightshift work will be limited to critical activities.

All permits, safety and environmental plans will be in place. Public access will be restricted in the area.
