Nasittuq Bargaining Update

Categories: IBEW, IBEW 2228, Ontario

Members of IBEW 2228,

Apologies that this information is late in coming, but I wanted to provide an update on the Nasittuq wage reopener arbitration that took place on Monday, January 19.

Quick version: We think it went well, but there was not enough time to complete the hearing. We will be meeting again on our next scheduled date of February 23.

Slightly longer version:

We had three of our members provide statements. Our lawyer questioned them, and the employer’s lawyer also had the opportunity to question them. Our members were well spoken and confident. They were well informed, as they are members who regularly experience many of the realities facing our workers at Nasittuq.

We also had several other members present to assist with the process and to provide feedback and advice in real time. Our legal counsel did an excellent job presenting everything in a logical and clear manner that brought all of the pieces together.

After our statements, there was only enough time for one of the employer’s witnesses to give their statement. As a result, more time is needed. We will meet again on February 23 so that the employer can present their remaining witnesses, we will have an opportunity to question them, and then, the parties will exchange legal arguments in writing and we will await the arbitrator’s decision.
Overall, as mentioned, we believe day one of the hearing went well. We feel we made a strong case, and we are optimistic at this point.
