Local 773 Promotes Electrical Trade to Next Generation · International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers

IBEW Local 773 in collaboration with Skills Ontario’s First Nations, Metis, & Inuit program, and the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECSB), hosted a career fair-style event at St. Clair College in Windsor, Feb 27^th 2024. This partnership is aimed to engage students from grades 7 to 12 in exploring career opportunities in the electrical industry.

The event boasted an array of interactive booths, each offering insights and activities tailored to educate and excite young minds about the advantages and opportunities within the electrical field. With a turnout of approximately 700 students throughout the day, the event served as a platform for IBEW Local 773 to showcase the benefits of apprenticeship and foster interest among the next generation of electricians.

One highlight of the event was the introduction of a groundbreaking partnership between Local 773 and the GECSB, spearheaded by the Next Gen Committee. This partnership aims to provide co-op opportunities for Grade 12 students aspiring to pursue a career in electrical work. This initiative not only bridges the gap between education and industry but also nurtures young talents, ensuring a steady influx of skilled professionals into the electrical trade.

Among those present at the event were members of the Next Gen Committee, including Nikko Sablone, Mike Lenson, and Liam Ryan. These passionate individuals, alongside other committee members like Ashley Soltys and Jodie Anderson, embody the commitment of IBEW Local 773 to empower the next generation of electrical workers, while Business Manager Karl Lovett and Organizer Joe Logan provide essential guidance and aid in making day-to-day operations run smoothly.

James Dodman, President of Local 773, emphasized the importance of community outreach to spread awareness about the values and opportunities within the IBEW. The Next Gen Committee has set ambitious goals to engage in such outreach activities, aiming to attract new members and apprentices from younger demographics. By instilling a sense of unity, camaraderie, and strong work ethic, Local 773 endeavors to secure a vibrant and sustainable future for both the union and the electrical industry as a whole.
