College Isn’t the Only Path: Inside an Electrical Career with IBEW
Categories: IBEW
What does a career in the electrical trades actually look like today?
Electric TV follows IBEW Local 405 electrician Gordon Grant onto a massive data center construction site in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to find out.
Gordon entered the IBEW apprenticeship at 19 after deciding the traditional college route wasn’t for him. Instead of taking on student loan debt, he began earning while learning the trade. His career has since taken him to major infrastructure projects and helped him build financial stability for himself and his family.
And the work is changing.
As data centers, advanced manufacturing and other major infrastructure projects expand across the country, skilled electricians are responsible for physically building and maintaining the systems that make that technology possible. The video’s central point is simple: artificial intelligence may change how people work, but large-scale infrastructure still requires trained people on the ground. Gordon describes that reality as being “basically AI-proof.”
This feature looks beyond the jobsite, too. Gordon discusses family, work-life balance, retirement and the life his career has helped him create.
For students and young professionals deciding what comes next, the electrical trades offer another path worth considering.
