Greetings,

The Local met with management at CKUA last week to negotiate a new contract. I am pleased to announce that we have reached a tentative agreement with the employer. The Memorandum of Settlement is posted below.

Highlights from the Memorandum of Settlement include:

  • A three-year term for the agreement, effective September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2029.
  • A salary increase of 1.5% effective September 1, 2026.
  • A salary increase of 1.0% effective March 1, 2027.
  • A salary increase of 1.5% effective September 1, 2027.
  • A salary increase of 1.0% effective March 1, 2028.
  • A wage reopener for the third year of the agreement.
  • Retroactive pay back to September 1, 2026, for employees on staff when the new agreement is signed, paid as a separate deposit. New pay rates take effect about 30 days after signing.
  • Improvements in leave without pay for union business.
  • Improvements in standby pay and minimum compensation for call-outs requiring travel.
  • Clarification on the termination of casual employees who have not worked more than 60 hours in the previous 12 months.
  • Adjustments to posting requirements for casual positions.
  • An improved vacation carryover provision, so members can build up a larger vacation balance before having to give CKUA a plan to reduce it.
  • Agreement to review and redesign the Group Benefits Plan to contain costs for both members and the employer.
  • Agreement to a benefits reopener in the second year of the agreement.
  • A letter of understanding committing both parties to an ongoing dialogue, through the Labour Management Committee, on the impacts of artificial intelligence on members and broadcasting.

We will be scheduling an information session to discuss the tentative agreement in the coming weeks. Ratification of the tentative agreement will take place after the information session.

I would like to thank the bargaining team for their contributions at the bargaining table. We would not have been able to come to an agreement without their hard work.

Please reach out if you have any questions about the tentative agreement.

In solidarity,
Paul Sly
Western Business Representative, IBEW 2228
