Canada homeowner buys one transfer switch, electrician installs another, and code remains murky

A Canadian homeowner trying to future-proof a renovation with battery backup and possibly solar is having trouble finding the correct transfer switch for their needs.
They ended up with a transfer switch that may be code-compliant but not actually useful for the job they had in mind. A mismatch like that can mean wasted equipment costs, extra electrician labor, and missed opportunities to use stored power to reduce everyday utility bills.

The homeowner’s plan was to support only a limited set of essential loads rather than shift the entire house onto backup power. In a Reddit post, they said a panel upgrade completed during a major renovation was supposed to work with “a large battery inverter system” and possibly “a small off grid solar setup,” with a manual transfer switch for selected critical circuits.
Instead of installing the Reliance 510 10-circuit transfer switch the homeowner had already bought, the electrician declined to use it, saying it “does not switch neutrals and is not to code in Canada (Québec).” A Generac 9854 Homelink transfer switch was installed in its place.
The problem, according to the homeowner, was that the Generac unit matched a different backup approach. They described it as “designed to pair with a large generator and flip the whole house over” and said it “does not allow to choose circuit by circuit what is powered.”
A critical-load setup can help a family avoid paying for a much larger backup system than they actually need, while also making it easier to use battery power selectively for a fridge, internet, lighting, or other essentials instead of energizing far more of the home.

Just because a product is sold widely does not necessarily mean it fits every local code requirement or every intended use case.
Code uncertainty was a major part of the homeowner’s question. They wrote that they were “reading a lot of mixed messages about transfer switches being allowed in Canada or not” and wanted to know whether a manual option like the Reliance 510 or a Natures generator 12 circuit model would actually be allowed.
Uncertainty can get expensive when a homeowner is trying to coordinate renovations, battery planning, and electrician labor all at once.
Backup power equipment is not one-size-fits-all. Some systems are designed to hand off large portions of a home to a generator, while others are better suited to managing selected loads one circuit at a time. For someone hoping to “power a circuit or two from the battery day to day,” the wrong hardware can undercut both convenience and savings.
If a home battery or small solar setup can cover a few essential circuits, that may reduce generator fuel use and allow the household to rely less on grid electricity for certain needs.
What can be done?
The end goal needs to be clearly defined before any equipment gets installed. Is the solution for whole-home backup, selected critical loads, generator use, battery use, or some combination of the above?
The cheapest-looking option upfront can become the most expensive if it has to be replaced. A transfer switch that supports only whole-home switching may not provide the daily flexibility that makes a battery system more practical or more cost-effective.
The mismatch between the homeowner’s plan and the installed setup was captured in their own words: “It’s important to be able to select the circuits to not draw too much power, and power a circuit or two from the battery day to day.”
A commenter offered a simpler workaround, although not exactly what the homeowner was going for: “Nothing is stopping you turning off breakers for circuits you don’t want.”
