A Year End Reflection for IBEW 2228
Categories: IBEW, IBEW 2228, Ontario
Members of IBEW 2228,
I would like to take a moment to reflect on this year which is about to draw to a close.
I know it has been an eventful year, to say the least. While I would say that the level of excitement has been unprecedented, it is worth remembering that as a Local Union approaching our 59th year, we have certainly seen interesting periods before. Change, challenge, and momentum are not new to us. These are things we are good at responding to, and they can strengthen us and prepare us for more of the same in the future.
Reflecting on everything that has happened over the last year has reinforced for me just how important it is that we preserve our history. Our Local has a long story, made up of moments we can be proud of. Times when people stepped forward to protect their coworkers and improve our working lives. Times when we came together collectively to respond to events that transpired, and in some cases continue to transpire. Given the wide range of jobs and conditions our members work under, those challenges can be varied and diverse, but meeting them together has always been at the heart of who we are. Our ability to respond collectively remains our greatest potential strength.
I am sharing an article that was written many years ago for our 25th anniversary. It captures some of the key moments from our early years. My hope is that we continue that work by adding the stories and experiences from the years since, so our history reflects not just where we started, but how we have grown. As I work toward this project, I ask that any members who can to share the stories and events they feel have been transformational over the last 34 years, so that we can begin to catch up with our past.
What we have today exists because of the efforts of those who came before us. While our past includes mistakes as well as successes, remembering both makes us stronger. If we work to remember and share what we have learned, we can help guide the members who will carry this Local forward into the years ahead.
A big thank you to all members for everything they have done toward our common well being over the last year.
Happy New Year
In solidarity,
Jeff Wendt
