Can you give me a brief overview of what it is you do in your work?
I am the sole administrative representative for JGC Folks on site. Many colleagues come from Japan and different parts of the globe, reflecting the company’s expansion alongside ongoing commissioning activities. The Japanese staff operates on a rotation of 70 days of work in Kitimat followed by 7 days off, and I provide extensive support during these 70 days, addressing their diverse needs. My responsibilities include managing 17 properties in town, ensuring they are maintained and cleaned, facilitating the relocation of their families from abroad, and coordinating with Kitimat Newcomers.
Have you grown into different roles on this project since starting?
My skills have developed during my time here. The diverse team includes people from England, Germany, Russia, and Japan, each bringing unique cultures, perspectives, and practices. It is important to be attuned to their individual needs and cultural differences.
What skills or lessons did you take from them?
One of the biggest lessons for me has been the cultural exchanges between Canadians and my coworkers. It’s eye-opening to see them appreciate things we often take for granted, like hiking, fishing, and local celebrations. I’d love to return for Phase 2, having learned so much. Health is always a priority for me, and I cherish the connections I make, whether with family, friends, or even strangers. It’s those little moments that really enrich life, and I always try to stay positive.
What would you say most motivates you to do what you do?
No matter what role I am in, it has a lot to do with integrity and loyalty, communication, connections and relationships.
What are you most excited or passionate about when it comes to your work?
I focus on helping others and working to ensure they have the best experience possible. A simple smile can make a big difference.
What are the goals you most want to accomplish in your work?
I’m eager to return for Phase 2, having gained so many valuable insights. Health remains my top priority, and I cherish the relationships I build. To me, there can be little distinction between a family member, a friend, or even a stranger; it’s the small, fleeting interactions that enrich our lives and help us maintain a positive outlook.
ON BEING LOCAL
What are your personal goals?
I love going out in nature, it makes me a better person all around. My home space is also important to me. We built a greenhouse this year, I love gardening, flowers and puttering around. I like stained glass and refurbishing antique pieces of furniture.
As an experienced professional living locally, what does work on the project mean for you and your career?
This is a huge project, to work on something like this is a once in a lifetime experience. I was here when you would see the trees before they were cleared and have been able to watch the site change and grow along with the City of Kitimat making great connections both at work and at home.
What were you doing before working at the LNG Canada Project?
I was at the BC Oil & Gas Commission, Spectra Energy, various projects.
As a local, what have YOU brought to the project that non-locals couldn’t have? (please brag)
People enjoy coming over to our home or enjoying the backyard. I’ve hosted BBQs and dinners, and they love just hanging out outside of the camp. Often, they cook for us, and we share good food and great company. I have about 20 fishing rods and a BBQ in my garage, and everyone is welcome to use them whenever they want. It creates a sense of community.
If you could give advice to anyone starting on a large project like this one, what would it be?
Stay humble, ask questions, embrace and appreciate your surroundings and always remember there are differences, and everyone is trying to do their best.
