Statement from IVP Shewchuk on the Government of Canada’s Announcement to Expand Union Training Access and Investment

Categories: Canada, IBEW

The federal government’s decision to double funding and revise application requirements under the Union Training and Innovation Program (UTIP) marks a major step forward for skilled trades training in Canada. It also signifies that the voices of IBEW Canada and the rest of Canada’s Building Trades Unions (CBTU) have been heard.

In partnership with the National Electrical Training Council (NETCO), IBEW Canada’s discussions with federal officials raised clear concerns about barriers that prevented many locals from accessing this funding and highlighted the need for capital-specific funding to support training centre growth. The changes announced show that the Government listened. They moved beyond a 50/50 funding model and expanded eligibility to support capital projects like training centre improvements. That means unions with limited cash flow can now access meaningful support to grow training capacity.

This shift is a big win for IBEW Canada. It provides us a greater opportunity to strengthen our training capabilities, expand facilities, and ensure our members have access to first-class skills development. It also demonstrates what can be achieved when we work collaboratively with our government to address real workforce challenges.

The electrical industry faces immense demand for qualified tradespeople over the next decade. We stand ready to partner with the Government to ensure apprenticeship training keeps pace with labour market needs and supports strong economic growth.

The IBEW will continue to produce the best-trained electrical workforce in Canada and serve as the number one stakeholder in the electrical industry, committed to building Canada Strong.
