Second generating unit in-service at Site C

FORT ST. JOHN: The second generating unit on the Site C project has come into operation and is providing power into BC Hydro’s electricity system.
“With two generating units up and running, this increases BC Hydro’s ability to produce more reliable electricity for customers heading into winter when the demand for power is at its highest,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions. “By this time next year, we expect to have all six generating units at Site C providing electricity to British Columbians.”
The remaining four generating units on the Site C project will come into operation one-by-one. Testing and commissioning work on the third generating unit is underway.
The project’s first generating unit came into service in late October. Each generating unit can provide more than 180 megawatts of electricity.
In total, Site C will provide 1,100 megawatts of capacity and produce about 5,100 gigawatt hours of electricity each year, adding about eight per cent more supply to British Columbia’s electricity grid.
When fully in service, Site C will provide enough clean electricity to reliably power nearly 500,000 new homes across British Columbia, or 1.7 million electric vehicles.
Construction on Site C began in July 2015 and the project is nearly 90 per cent complete.
