Financial Strategies to Help You Get Ahead

Hi, this is Richard Hughes. I’m the co-founder of Canada’s Best Pension Plan (CBPP). We are the consultants for a number of the IBEW Local 230 retirement plans.

Ah, the end of the school year. Even for us adults it can bring back exciting memories of those care-free summer days.

But did you ever get saddled with a “summer reading list” before you bolted out those front doors on your way to summertime freedom?

I know I did.

As a small act of revenge, I present to you the Summer 2023 Personal Finance Reading List.

This will be the last issue of re:money until we return in the fall, with a new look and more interactive features to help you on your financial journey.

In the meantime, I’m happy to present the Summer 2023 Reading List. Click the name of each book below to see it on Amazon.

Enjoy and we’ll see you again in September!

The Psychology of Money – In the real world, personal money decisions aren’t really made on a spreadsheet. As much as we would all like to think we act rationally all the time, it simply isn’t true. This is one of the best books on personal finance published in the last 30 years and I highly encourage everyone to read it, more than once.

Your Money or Your Life – I first read this book when it was published in 2008 and it changed how I view money entirely. One of my favorite quotes from the book, and one that is shared frequently: Endless desire is one of the pitfalls of human nature, and one of the first things you need to cure if you want to get ahead more quickly. The longer I’ve thought about this and considered it in my own life, the more it has proven true. Definitely worth a read, for anyone.

I Will Teach You To Be Rich – OK, the title of this one makes it sound scammy. But I can vouch for the content of this book as well as the character of the author. The section on “automating your finances” alone is well worth picking up this book. In fact, the book was so popular that there is a 2023 spin-off series on Netflix called How to Get Rich. You can watch it by clicking here.

The Wealth Barber and The Wealthy Barber Returns – Author David Chilton is a Canadian legend in the personal finance space, and his books are classics. They’re written in an easy-to-read and enjoyable story format. Since the publication of his original book in 1995, David has sold over a million copies to Canadians. I know I’ve given out dozens of them to my clients over the years. Jump on this classic and the sequel for relaxing and educational reads.

See you in the fall,

Richard.
