This is mostly just an FYI about how international unions can band together and fight for everyone, regardless of country.
Yesterday, President Sean McGarvey of North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) sent a strong message to the United States Senate: stop the harmful tariffs being imposed on Canada.
In his letter, President McGarvey condemned the use of emergency powers to justify these tariffs and called on U.S. senators to take action to reverse them. He made it clear that Canada and the U.S. have a long-standing partnership, economically and in our workforce, and that we should be treated as allies, not competitors. A copy of the letter is attached for your reference.
Currently, the U.S. Senate is considering Senate Joint Resolution 37, introduced by Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia. This resolution would put an end to the misuse of emergency powers that allowed these tariffs to be implemented in the first place.
NABTU is urging the Senate to support this resolution, and we at IBEW 993 stand with them. These tariffs don’t just threaten trade; they risk harming the shared success of workers and the construction industries on both sides of the border.
Standing together, we can protect good jobs and maintain the strong, cooperative relationship we’ve built across North America.
