Message regarding Ongoing Workforce Adjustment
Categories: IBEW, IBEW 2228, Ontario
Members of IBEW 2228,
For members employed with the Federal Government, you are undoubtedly aware of the ongoing Workforce Adjustment (WFA) process. I understand the uncertainty this creates and recognize the stress many of you may be experiencing right now.
I want to be honest and clear with you. I do not want to create false hope, and I do not want to minimize the very real concerns our members are facing or the serious impact this will have on those who ultimately receive notification letters. At the same time, based on the information currently available to me, I am cautiously optimistic that only a small percentage of members will receive letters. I must emphasize, however, that while I have reason to remain optimistic, I do not yet have concrete details on how many letters will be issued or the specific types of notifications members may receive.
It’s important to understand that receiving a letter does not necessarily mean you will lose your job. There are different types of notifications, and they have very different meanings:
Some letters may indicate you are “affected” – meaning your position is under review, but no final decision has been made. Many members who receive “affected” letters are ultimately retained in their positions after the selection process.
Other letters may indicate “surplus” or “opting” status – meaning your position is being eliminated, but you would enter a period where alternative employment options are explored while you remain employed and paid.
If you receive any workforce adjustment letter please contact me. We will help you understand what your specific letter means, explain your rights and options, and support you through whatever process follows.
I know this is must an anxious time for some, especially without having all the details we’d like to have. I wish I could provide more concrete information right now, but I am committed to keeping you informed as the situation develops. I will share updates as soon as I have reliable information to provide.
In solidarity,
Jeff Wendt
