JFK Modernization Project Takes Off with the help of NECA & IBEW
Categories: IBEW
America’s busiest international gateway is being rebuilt for the future—and Electric TV is taking you inside the work powering it.
John F. Kennedy International Airport is in the midst of a historic $19 billion modernization, redefining what a 21st-century transportation hub can be. At the center of this transformation is a unified partnership between the New York City Chapter of NECA and the skilled electricians of IBEW Local 3.
Across the project, more than 1,700 union electricians from 15 NECA contractors are delivering the largest electrical construction project in New York City history. At Terminal 1, that vision is coming to life through highly specialized electrical work. EJ Electric is executing a cutting-edge solar and microgrid installation, creating resilient, future-ready power infrastructure designed to support the terminal for decades. Beneath the surface, Lion Heart Electric is installing the electrical backbone for the terminal’s automated baggage handling system—a data-driven network engineered to move millions of bags efficiently and seamlessly.
Together, these systems enhance efficiency, reliability, and sustainability while supporting union jobs, workforce development, and long-term economic growth tied to one of the nation’s most critical transportation hubs.
From advanced electrical infrastructure to complex systems installed inside an active international airport, this project showcases what’s possible when forward-thinking contractors and highly trained union electricians work together.
