On Tuesday IBEW 993 held their first Construction Organizing Membership Education Training (COMET) training in quite some time. James Olson and Brian Andrews were the course facilitators with Jim Watson, an IBEW Education Specialist assisting.

We’ll be holding COMET courses regularly in the near future with the course being mandatory for all apprentices, new members, and Salts.

COMET stands for Construction Organizing Membership Education Training, and it’s a program in the IBEW that focuses on the importance of organizing and getting members involved. COMET classes teach the history of organizing, including the “do’s and don’ts” and why organizing is important. They also cover the basics of unions, including how they represent workers and negotiate better wages, benefits, and working conditions. COMET is designed to generate support and participation in organizing from rank and file members.
